Chapter 15: Bridgehead Part II

Shots rang out from every direction. Mixer’s pursuer had seemingly given up, or he was dead already. Players’ deaths were displayed in an endless stream all the time on his screen, so he had to deactivate the feature. He heard steps to his left, went to his knees, and aimed at the small alley between two walls.

Ano appeared, his health bar half gone. They stood there for a moment, staring at each other; Mixer wanted to say something, but he was still on ignore with Ano. He lowered his gun and looked in the direction where the main battle was taking place, but nobody was coming. Ano began moving towards the battlefield again, and he raised his own weapon before following. They’d only just made it to the next corner when Ano went to one knee and dropped behind cover.

“Sniper!” Mixer yelled and realized Ano wouldn’t hear him. He looked up and saw the sniper above, sitting in a house ruin and taking aim at him. Mixer leaped aside, and the rubble exploded next to him. He rolled over the muddy ground, then raised his rifle and fired a burst at the sniper. It hit just next to him, and the sniper took cover.

Mixer kept his aim, knowing he would come up and fire at them again; they had him pinned. A second passed. Then another. Then the man came around, and as Mixer pulled the trigger, so did Ano. The sniper fell back and evaporated as he fell to the ground. Ano had killed him and received the XP, but Mixer was happy for him. Despite their fallout, he hoped Ano would make it.

A loud roar absorbed all of the noise of the battle. The Gatekeeper had arrived. Mixer had hoped to have transcended to Level 80 before it showed up. From the side, he saw LadyAzazare appear with DanskaDemon and take cover.

“We got most of the Ravagers, but Deadlock and their core group remain in a good position right up there,” she yelled.

“How far are you?” Mixer asked.

“Almost there.” Lady grinned.

Danska only looked at him and nodded—something was wrong with his expression. He avoided eye contact. When Mixer turned to Ano, he realized his old friend did the same.

He finally looked at Lady, then took one step back, holding his rifle in both hands. A message appeared on his screen.

YOU HAVE BEEN EXPELLED FROM SEMPERFI.

Forever faithful, huh? So much for empty promises. Mixer reacted right away, raising his gun as Lady did the same. His points would probably be enough for her to transcend, so she had waited for that very moment to harvest him. He pushed himself off the ground with one leg and rammed against Ano as he turned to him. They both tumbled to the ground. He opened fire, switching his gun to auto.

Lady was hit, and her burst missed him. She spasmed and was thrown back. Ano tried to push him off him, but a strong elbow to the head sent him back to the ground.
